But from what I read about the Realtek chip devices, that most of them use the exact same PCB configuration and the ROMs for those devices are interchangeable, meaning is possible that another vendor with same chip will have a firmware that works for you.

Even though Realtek makes good media player chips and those devices are not horrible, they still do not update the Android version. So is best to buy device that gets updates or is cheap price and has custom firmwares available.

I believe the best firmwares for Realtek CPU devices come from Zidoo which has close relationship with the chip manufacturer.

Always when switching firmwares make sure the new device firmware has the same Ram, WiFi module, and CPU configuration as your own device. And remember there is always a possibility you may brick your device in the process. Freaktab forum has some info about updating firmwares for Realtek, and also I would talk to the people on the Zidoo forum to find clues if you plan to switch to a Zidoo made firmware.
